GEOGRAPHY AND ANCIENT LIFE
Latin America Latin America is applied to most of the Americas south of the United States. These countries cover a vast area between the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans... Latin America consists of four distinct regions: 1) Mexico, 2) Central America, 3) West Indies or Caribbean and 4) South America (Killoran 105). Amazon River The Amazon River flows from west to east across South America and is the worlds second largest river.
Andes Mountains The Andes Mountains stretch the length of the West Coast of South America.
IMPERIALISM AND COLONIAL LIFE
Conquistador - The Conquistadors were Spanish elite/adventurers who assisted in the demise of New World populations.

Hernado Cortez conquered the Aztec in 1519.

Francisco Pizarro conquered the Inca by 1530.

COLOMBIAN EXCHANGE - When Christopher Columbus returned from the New World he set off one of history's greatest examples of cultural diffusion ever seen. Many foods, spices, and ideas cris-crossed the Atlantic and influenced both New World and Old World peoples.

Enlightenment- the Enlightenment was a movement in the mid-18th century (1700s) that hoped to use scientific reasoning to better understand man and nature.
Encomienda System- In the Encomienda system a small privileged class owned all of the land and forced the natives to work in exchange for protection.
Social Classes During the colonial period there were four main social classes: § EUROPEANS § CREOLES People born in America of European parents. Wealthy landowners, lawyers, and priests but looked down on by Europeans. § MESTIZOS & MULATTOS People of mixed European and Indian or ancestry. § INDIANS & BLACKS- This group worked in the fields and mines lacked and lacked social, economic, political opportunities (Killoran 111).
Mexican Revolution- the Mexican Revolution broke out in 1910 and many reforms were adopted, bringing improvements in the lives of the people.
MODERN ERA
Juan Peron In 1943, Juan Peron came to power in Argentina. A popular leader, he was accused of violating individual liberties. In 1953, he was forced out of office by the military.

Cuban Missile Crisis- the Cuban Missile Crisis brought the United States and Russia to brink of nuclear war. In 1962, after the Bay of Pigs (a failed attempt to remove Fidel Castro from power in Cuba by an US trained group of Cuban exiles) the Soviet Union attempted to place nuclear weapons in Cuba, President Kennedy established a navel blockade (considered an act of war) to prevent the final missile pieces from being delivered. After several tension filled days the Soviet Union backed down.
